Blizzard of '78 - 30th Anniversary

I was 10 years old at the time. The previous evening ended with 44 degrees, rain, and some thunder and in less than 12 hours we had 60 mile an hour winds and 20 inches of snow and 30 to 40 below zero wind chills. The low pressure system causing the storm recorded the lowest pressure at Cleveland in history - even lower than a Hurricane. The weather people called it a Severe Blizzard - something that hadn't happened in decades.

Revenge driving justice system

There seems to be a perception that we coddle criminals, that they sit on their asses in jail and watch TV all the time, while the victims of crime have their life ruined by whatever degree of the crime that happened to them. People who have that perception are the one's who want the utopia and want revenge on the criminal. There is a disturbing trend to make people pay for their crimes for the rest of their lives even after serving a jail sentence.

Some Ohio college students want to carry guns on campus

The Columbus Dispatch had a story on Tuesday 10/23 about a protest from some students who want to be able to have concealed weapons on campus. When Ohio adopted a concealed carry law they exempted university and college campuses. Students who feel such a prohibition is wrong, protested by wearing empty gun holster around campus. It just seems a bit childish as if carrying a gun is like some kind of gage of manliness or something. It would be better to just get a tattoo.

Ellen DeGeneres is in a dog fight

Sometimes one has to take a break and look at something that looks sad and funny at the same time. Recently talk show host Ellen DeGeneres and her partner Portia de Rossi adopted a small dog from the animal rescue organization "Mutts and Moms". It seems that the dog didn't get along with Ellen and Portia's cats so Ellen gave the dog to her hairstylist. When "Mutts and Moms" stopped by to check on the dog and found out that DeGeneres gave the dog away, they went to the hairstylist and took the dog back. They claim that DeGeneres violated the terms of the adoption when she didn't tell them she had given the dog away.

Protecting "our" children from books whether you like it or not

I was watching the local news on Wednesday when I came across a story about a book controversy in a local school district. It seems some parents complained about The Chocolate War an assigned book that they thought to be offensive. What is ironic is that one of the book and film's main theme is "conformity" - where the majority imposes orthodoxy in thoughts and belief. That is what censorship does. It imposes an orthodoxy in thoughts and beliefs by suppressing any that are contrary.

Sicko makes the point

I heard today about the throwdown on CNN between Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN's resident medical expert, and filmmaker Michael Moore over the "facts" in Moore's documentary "Sicko". If you think the Walter Reed scandal was bad

I read an article in the Nation tonight that talks about the rash of military discharges of wounded Iraq war veterans, in order, it seems to save the VA money on benefits. The article, "How Specialist Town Lost His Benefits", by Joshua Kors, highlights a previously unreported practice of discharging wounded soldiers as having a personality disorder, which happens to be one of the ways a soldier can be discharged and not be eligible for any future benefits.

I want my NFL please

When I moved to Columbus the issue because troublesome. I am now in the middle of 2 team's market area (Cleveland and Cincinnati) and also could be included in a 3rd (Pittsburgh) and all of them are in the AFC. Our local CBS station has the thankless job of deciding which team to show each week of the season especially if they are playing at the same time - which seems to be most of the time. Five years of playing has shown I am the unluckiest player in the world. I have never finished higher than 4th in any of the leagues I have been in and this past season I finished last or near the bottom of the three leagues I joined. Reflections on President Ford

I was but a wee lad in 1974 when I watched President Nixon announced he was resigning his office and that then VP Ford would be taking over. After the corruption of Nixon on the news every night, Ford was boring. Until he pardoned Nixon. Even as a kid of 6, I knew it was a bone head move on his part to do it. Now many years later you have to wonder that if Ford wanted to "put Watergate and the Nixon presidency in the past", then why did he not pardon everyone involved in the Watergate mess?

Sometimes computers make me feel stupid

To go along with a new home for my personal blog (the one you're reading now) I decided to upgrade my home computer too. I bought my current machine in 2003. I'm suppose to be at work at this time but I called in sick. I'm not sick. I guess I am just bored with my job. I did plan on going I really did, even after waking up late and knowing I would be late. But when it came time to trudge to work I just couldn't do it.
