Can't we all just get along

This year it looks like no matter who is the Democratic candidate this will be the year for change in the White House. My fear is that inter-family squabbles might upset the apple cart and the Democrats will miss out again like they did in 2000.

Primary start to long election cycle

This week is when the rubber hits the road and all the glad handing and baby kissing done this past year takes a breather as the 2008 US Presidential election begins its primary phase. Politically I am an independent so I don't get to vote for a candidate during the primaries nor do I want to. Although I don't vote in the primaries, I want to write about some of the choices available and why it doesn't matter anyway and that primaries are only a dog and pony show at tax payer expense.

Revenge driving justice system

There seems to be a perception that we coddle criminals, that they sit on their asses in jail and watch TV all the time, while the victims of crime have their life ruined by whatever degree of the crime that happened to them. People who have that perception are the one's who want the utopia and want revenge on the criminal. There is a disturbing trend to make people pay for their crimes for the rest of their lives even after serving a jail sentence.

Some Ohio college students want to carry guns on campus

The Columbus Dispatch had a story on Tuesday 10/23 about a protest from some students who want to be able to have concealed weapons on campus. When Ohio adopted a concealed carry law they exempted university and college campuses. Students who feel such a prohibition is wrong, protested by wearing empty gun holster around campus. It just seems a bit childish as if carrying a gun is like some kind of gage of manliness or something. It would be better to just get a tattoo.

Protecting "our" children from books whether you like it or not

I was watching the local news on Wednesday when I came across a story about a book controversy in a local school district. It seems some parents complained about The Chocolate War an assigned book that they thought to be offensive. What is ironic is that one of the book and film's main theme is "conformity" - where the majority imposes orthodoxy in thoughts and belief. That is what censorship does. It imposes an orthodoxy in thoughts and beliefs by suppressing any that are contrary.

Exclusive television deals aren't unusual. Notre Dame has had an exclusive deal with NBC for many years to broadcast its football games each fall. I heard today about the throwdown on CNN between Dr. Sanjay Gupta, CNN's resident medical expert, and filmmaker Michael Moore over the "facts" in Moore's documentary "Sicko". I read an article in the Nation tonight that talks about the rash of military discharges of wounded Iraq war veterans, in order, it seems to save the VA money on benefits. I was but a wee lad in 1974 when I watched President Nixon announced he was resigning his office and that then VP Ford would be taking over. After the corruption of Nixon on the news every night, Ford was boring. Until he pardoned Nixon. Even as a kid of 6, I knew it was a bone head move on his part to do it. Religious Right lies about Mt. Soledad Cross

The US Supreme Court, more specifically Justice Anthony Kennedy, issued a stay of a lower federal court ruling that said the Mt. Soledad Easter Cross is unconstitutional and it needed to be removed from the city of San Diego's property by August 2nd or the city would be fined $5,000 a day. Some irony on immigration

Immigration seems to be 2006's "gay marriage ban" issue for political conservatives. It seems that many US citizens have the same ideas as the GOP when it comes to illegal immigration - like that they should be deported, are taking jobs from native born US citizens, and some talking heads make it seem that next to terrorism - illegal immigrants are a threat to America. To highlight the issue President Bush wants to send 6,000 troops to the southern border to help police the area and erect a long wall to keep out Mexican and Latin American illegals as that seems to be the biggest problem area. Now I have no concrete evidence but all of it smells of bigotry and racism.

How many illegal things must President Bush do before he is removed from office. I don't know if this country can wait until January 20, 2009 when a new administration is sworn in. Are the Democrats any different than the GOP?

Not when it comes to incestuous backroom political machine dealing. It seems the Democrats haven't come very far since the days of Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley (1902-1976). In 2004, Dem leaders dumped a promising candidate in Governor Howard Dean, who created a buzz through his straight talk and Internet website, to go with horse face Senator John Kerry just because it seemed it was his turn. This year in Ohio, state and national Democratic leaders forced a promising candidate, Paul Hackett, an Iraq war veteran, who came a close shave in defeating Republican Jean Schmidt in last summer's special congressional election, to drop out of a Senate race against incumbent Senator Mike Dewine.

Ohio Republicans don't want democratic elections

This November, Ohioans will have a chance to make a fundamental change in the way elections are operated in the state. From donation limits, to independent redistricting, to "no-excuse" absentee balloting, and to removing politics from the administration of election, the four proposed constitutional amendments would try to make up for the joke of an election the state had in 2004 when we joined Florida as a laughing stock of the nation. "Rathergate" still doesn't change the facts

Okay, let me get this straight. Senior vice president Betsy West, 60 Minutes executive producer Josh Howard and senior broadcast producer Mary Murphy have all been asked to resign.
