The big news in my area is that Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) has changed his mind and now supports gay marriage. He said he changed because his son came out as gay. Some people I know are jumping for joy over the news but I’m not impressed. Why is it that these conservative types seem to only change their mind when it actually affects their family? Why can’t they do what’s right because it is right and not for selfish reasons.
“I’m announcing today a change of heart on an issue that a lot of people feel strongly about,” Portman said. “It has to do with gay couples’ opportunity to marry. And during my career in the House and also last couple years here in the Senate, you know, I’ve taken a position against gay marriage, rooted in part in my faith and my faith tradition. And had a very personal experience, which is my son came to Jane, my wife, and I, told us that he was gay and that it was not a choice and that, you know he, that’s just part of who he is, and he’d been that way ever since he could remember.”
Portman said his son’s revelation led him to drop his opposition to same-sex marriage. “And that launched an interesting process for me, which was kind of rethinking my position,” he said. “You know, talking to my pastor and other religious leaders and going through a process of, at the end, changing my position on the issue. I now believe people ought to have the right to get married.”
Portman Drops Opposition To Gay Marriage After Son Comes Out
So does this mean that Portman will become pro-choice if a family member needs an abortion or will he change is mind about the need for earned benefit cuts if one of his children should become poor?? Please??
Politicians can change their minds and they do quite often. Just look at Portman’s Republican party who didn’t mind President Bush breaking the budget to fight two wars but who scream bloody murder if President Obama wants to use the budget to help those who need it.
Portman’s change of heart proves how broken Congress is today. Most of those elected to serve in Congress seem to forget they work for all of us and not just the people who “bribe” them with campaign cash.
Unless your child is a mass murder or other criminal, parents should try to support them no matter who they are and if parents can do that then why can’t we all do what’s right because it is right and not have to wait for it to personally affect us?
